Hypersexualization, Hegemony and Me – Last October, I was on a flight from SFO to Miami, FL to present at the National Dance Educators’ Conference. I happened to sit next to Nancy Ng from the Luna Institute in Berkeley, California. She too, was on her way to the conference.  Ms. Ng asked the title of my presentation. With a hint of hesitation, I announced; Addressing Hypersexulatization in Collegiate Dance. To my surprise, Nancy expressed interest and shared the following story.

DA:NCE Happenings…

Who knew that the world would close down and social distancing would be the norm in January 2020? Although it’s valid to say that this has been unexpected (see my April blog), I’ve been surprised by a silver lining. I may not see you in person but I’m connecting with dance educators in NDEO (National Dance Educators Organization), CDEA (California Dance Educator’s Association) and in One Inland Empire Art (a new group connecting arts organizations in the Inland Empire) in webinars and conferences. What a wonderful way to network!

Here’s a heads up about 2 upcoming events:

  1. DA:NCE is a proud sponsor of the NCOSE (National Center on Sexual Exploitation) Online Summit, July 22-28. The DA:NCE 20 minute film ‘Healthy or Harmful Children’s Dance: What do the Experts Think?’ will be presented. You can attend for FREE but you must register. Learn from top experts and participate in interactive groups from over 25+ countries. Don’t miss it!
  2. Supporting quality dance locally, DA:NCE is sponsoring State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara at the Redlands Bowl on August 7. Depending on national recommendations about corona at that time, this event might be done online instead of in person.
